Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended National Voters’ Day greetings to the people of the country and called on them to honour the spirit of democracy to strengthen the resolve for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India).
National Voters’ Day, celebrated annually on January 25 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in 1950, aims to “honour voters, encourage youth participation, strengthen democratic values, and promote universal adult suffrage.”

PM Modi said that the National Voters’ Day is about “further deepening our faith in the democratic values of our nation”. He complimented all those associated with the Election Commission of India for “their efforts to strengthen our democratic processes.”
“Being a voter is not just a constitutional privilege, but an important duty that gives every citizen a voice in shaping India’s future. Let us honour the spirit of our democracy by always taking part in democratic processes, thereby strengthening the foundations of a Viksit Bharat,” the Prime Minister said on X.

Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge said that the National Voters’ Day is a “powerful reminder that a nation’s future belongs to its people, and that our collective voice can shape our shared destiny.”
He stressed, “The people of India deserve a free, fair and fearless elections, where clean electoral rolls and level-playing field is the primary requisite.”
Kharge targeted the ruling BJP and the Election Commission of India over the issues of “vote chori” and SIR exercise, saying that snatching the right to vote tarnishes India’s long-cherished democracy.
“In recent times, our institutions like the Election Commission of India, have faced sustained pressure. It is therefore our solemn responsibility to protect their independence and integrity, so that Democracy does not merely survive, but truly thrives,” he added.
